The content of this work is the Elamkulam P.N. Kunjan Pillai memorial lecture delivered by Dr. C.T. Kurien on 30th January, 2012 titled “Whither the Indian Economy?”. The discussion centres on the growth and evolution of the Indian economy from the point of Rajiv Gandhi’s ‘New Economic Policy’ to the 90s economic reform and beyond. Dr. Kurien appraises the impact of the reforms, discusses market and foreign capital, as well as the categories of ‘rich’ and ‘poor’. The text attempts to posit the possibility of an alternative economic model in the context of India.
