In April 2022, Kerala Council for Historical Research signed an MoU with the University of Leiden and the National Archives of Netherlands that laid the grounds for a seven year collaboration between the above institutions. This collaborative project is entitled Cosmos Malabaricus (CosMa), and various activities will be undertaken as part of this collaboration, including training Indian students in medieval and early modern Dutch and in the use of archives, translation of select Dutch documents and encouraging research in the histories of the Dutch colonial period and more broadly in Indian ocean studies.
The one day event planned on 23rd January 2023 is a part of the academic inauguration of the Cosmos Malabaricus project. Two major events have been planned as a part of this. The morning session will be a public lecture by Prof. Jos Gommans, Professor of Colonial and Global History at the University of Leiden. The afternoon session is a workshop on the relevance of the archive in history writing.
