Archaeological research has become an interdisciplinary initiative in the 21st century. Archaeology, from its humble beginning in antiquarianism, has seen various theoretical approaches such as cultural history, processual archaeology and post-processual during its journey in the past three centuries. Historians and anthropologists, in the Indian context, have been critical of the approaches of archaeologists. Archaeology needs to integrate the approaches of history, anthropology and other social sciences to become more relevant in this era and to arrive at meaningful interpretations, especially in the context of South Asia.

Scientific applications have always contributed to the discipline of archaeology, from the time of Nikolas Steno, who contributed to the ideas related to geological formations. A variety of scientific studies on material culture and scientific applications, nowadays, have contributed to archaeological research right from the designing of archaeological surveys, through data collection, analysis, digital visualization and enhancement of data, and interpretation, and museum exhibition, to the publication of reports.

Many of the archaeological and historical students get only course lectures and they do not get sufficient exposure to scientific application in archaeological research. There is an urgent need to integrate scientific applications in the study of material culture among the students and professionals of history and archaeology.   To fulfill this objective, KCHR is organizing this workshop.
